E-scooter gunman found guilty of shooting gang rival in Southwark

Two men were jailed for their involvement in the shooting of a man three times in Southwark.

Kemar Edwards from Plumstead, 25, and Amari Bailey from Peckham, 23, were sentenced at the Old Bailey on the 29 January to 18 and 12 years in prison respectively after being found guilty of Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent.

Edwards was also convicted for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a firearm while prohibited, while both were given a three-year extended license as well.

The Metropolitan Police Trident South Specialist Crime Command‘s Detective Constable John Davis, said: “Edwards and Bailey are extremely dangerous individuals, who had the arrogance to brazenly carry out a targeted shooting in the street in broad daylight on a summer’s afternoon.

“This posed a significant risk to the wider public. They are now safely behind bars for a substantial amount of time for their offending.”

The incident in Bradenham Close, Walworth, on 24 June 2023 involved Edwards, who was riding an e-scooter, approaching the victim and firing three shots with a handgun.

The victim was believed to be a rival gang member and was seated in a vehicle at the time of the attack, which caused serious injuries to his arm and knee.

Riding a stolen moped, Bailey pursued the victim for 20 minutes before contacting Edwards and directing him to the victim’s location.

The weapon that was used in the attack was not recovered. However, the evidence presented in court painted a negative picture of the pair’s coordinated actions.

Following an extensive investigation by the Trident South Specialist Crime Command, Edwards and Bailey were identified and prosecuted.

Despite the pair’s attempt to conceal their identities by wearing balaclavas and motorbike helmets, detectives were able to piece together important information by carefully examining CCTV footage and witness statements.

Edwards was arrested in Greenwich on 15 December 2023 and subsequently charged, while Bailey was interviewed on 5 February of this year and later charged.

DC Davis said: “We would like to thank members of the public who informed police on hearing the shooting, their evidence assisted in proving that Edwards fired the shots in a CCTV blind spot.

“Trident will investigate all shootings to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”
