Community art project asks: “What does Battersea mean to you?”

A community art project at Battersea Power Station is asking young Wandsworth residents what the area means to them.

Together In Battersea is a collaboration between the power station and socially conscious design collective Power Out of Restriction (POoR) and will be unveiled on September 20 as part of the London Design Festival 2024.

The public artwork will be inspired by the ideas and designs of Wandsworth residents under the age of 18, who can attend two workshops at the venue later this August.

Shawn Adams co-founder of POoR said: “Our organisation seeks to champion young people and provide them with creative opportunities.”

The architecture and design focused workshops for Together In Battersea will teach attendees new design techniques including collaging, sketching and model making.

POoR Collective also designs and creates, characteristically colourful, murals and architecture for local communities, the most recent of which is their current installation, ‘Together We Rise’, in Battersea Power Station.

This installation comprises over 100 vibrant flags, inspired by the sunrise and sunset over the power station, and seeks to bring more colour to the historic turbine halls which now serve as a shopping and community area.

London Design Festival Director Ben Evans said: “Together We Rise exemplifies the transformative power of public art and its ability to engage and inspire communities.”

Evans said: “We are excited to collaborate on Together In Battersea, continuing our mission to make art and design accessible to all and spotlight emerging voices in the design industry.”

The architecture and design workshops, which will inspire the artwork, will be held by POoR Collective on August 13 and August 16 at the power station.
