Mika Stojsavljevic was in seed-beating form once again as the Wimbledon wildcard defeated another higher ranked opponent to reach the last eight of the girls’ singles.
After shocking fourth seed Lucciana Pérez Alarcón in her second round contest, the 14-year-old caused an upset yet again as she defeated 13th seed Emerson Jones 6-1 7-5 to reach the last eight on her Junior Wimbledon debut.
It was another calm and confident display from Stojsavljevic against an opponent with much more experience at this level.
Stojsavljevic said: “She’s quite highly ranked – it was really big to get that last point. I was just really happy to be there.
“In that first set, she couldn’t really do anything to stop me. I was playing really well, but it was just easy. I wasn’t doing anything that special, I was just hitting my shots well and she struggled a bit.
“Obviously it was hard to sustain that level, so I think I dipped a bit and lost a tiny bit of focus, but it was good that I managed to regroup and close it out.
“This is my first Junior Slam and I got a wildcard, so it means a lot to me.”
Stojsavljevic, who trains at the LTA’s National Academy in Loughborough, is one of the three juniors to reach the last eight across the singles draws, alongside Ranah Stoiber and Henry Searle.
It is just the sixth time that three junior British players have all reached the last eight of the same Junior Wimbledon, the last time coming in 2018.
And it is also the first time two girls players have reached the quarter-finals since back in 2010.
Up next for Londoner Stojsavljevic is fifth seed Renáta Jamrichová, who was girls’ doubles champion at the Australian Open in January.
She added: “It would mean a lot to reach the semi-final, but I’m taking it one match at a time and getting ready.
“I have a lot of confidence. Obviously she’s good, but I’m also good and I think it will be a good battle.”
