Isabelle Lacy could not hide her excitement after Sachia Vickery’s withdrawal from the LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy guaranteed she would be one of a record four British players in the quarterfinals.
The 16-year-old, Katie Swan, Lily Yuriko Miyazaki, and Katie Boulter progressed, meaning there will be four women in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017 when Naomi Broady, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, and Katy Dunne reached the same stage.
The Surbiton High School A-Levels student beat Madison Brengle in the Round of 32, her first victory over someone ranked in the top 100 players on the planet.
And she is looking forward to a fascinating encounter against someone she knows well in the quarterfinals.
“I was feeling really confident on the grass coming in, and I am super excited to be in the quarterfinals,” she said.
“I am so excited; I think we might be on centre court again and I am playing Lily.
“I know her quite well; she is from Surrey, and we play county together.
“She is a really nice girl, so I am looking forward to it.
“I am super happy; I have had a really good few matches leading up to the 100k.
“I played in the UK Pro League; I got five matches in six days.”
Lacy was raring and ready to go when she found out that her game against the world No.170 would not go ahead.
And she admitted it was a good opportunity to prepare for the next round.
“So, I was ready to go, I was literally in my match outfit and then the tournament director said that she gave me a walkover.
“Then I went to practice about an hour after and I am going to have some physio later and watch some of my opponent’s matches.
“But yeah, a really big sleep tonight.”
