In a clear demonstration of support for the LGBTQ+ community, the Hounslow council has released a Rainbow Junction in Chiswick Road, based on the idea by the West London Queer Project (WLQP) on February 3.
Rainbow Junction has been launched at the start of both LGBTQ+ History month and Football vs Homophobia month of action.
The junction has been created at the point Chiswick High Road meets Annandale Rd and Turnham Green Terrace and consists of four separate crossings in the colours of the progress pride flag.
Council leader Shantanu Rajawat said: “Hounslow is a borough where everyone is welcome regardless of sexual orientation or identity.
“West London Queer Project has grown from a small group of friends to a borough-wide organisation of more than 5000 members in under a year; a clear indication of the need for our LGBT+ community to have a voice, recognition, and support.”
Previously, the WLQP and Hounslow council have worked together during Pride 2022 and in the development of a new Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion strategy. The council has also provided support to the West London Queer Project on its work on well-being and social connection through the Thriving Communities funding.
Founder of West London Queer Project, Aubrey Crawley said: “We are delighted to continue a successful association with the Council and celebrate these important landmarks in such a public way.”
Apart from the launch of the junction, Hounslow council is hosting a special event on the afternoon of 10 February known as Art – Behind the Lens. The event will feature a mix of artists, media editors and writers.
Council staff will also be discussing issues associated with real-life experiences of the LGBTQ+ in the past and present.
